I've never been to the area you describe, but my Kimmels, Florys, and
Bowmans lived there before 1887. Well, some of them were at Auburn. The
Virden/Girard/Auburn area is also the area about which the book "Pleasant Hill"
by Ethel Harshbarger Weddle (2002, Girard Sesquicentennial Book Committee,
377 pp) was written, so there should be things relating to the Vanimans,
Harshbargers and Brubakers, among others, to be seen.

Chester Melvin Vaniman, the renowned
inventor/photographer/explorer/aeronaut and his brother Elmer, killed in the spectacular explosion of their
dirigible, are among the folks buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. "Pleasant
Hill" has an alphabetized listing of Pleasant Hill Cemetery burials. The
author also mentions that

"there are burials of some members of Pleasant Hill families
in the Dunkard/Sugar Creek Cemetery. This cemetery is
described as located about 1/2 mile east from township roads
3.5W and 13.5AS, northwest of Divernon, Sangamon County,
IL. Among pertinent names are Fahs, Masterson, Shearer,
Flory, Miller, and Harnly."

The Vanimans at LaVerne also connect to my Kimmel and Bower family. Wish
I could make the trip you mention...
