Dwayne, This is an old message to reply to, but it might help. A friend who has researched in NC says that the counties tell researchers they sent all their records to Raleigh. I haven't studied their archival system, but it looks as if the search might be centralized. Of course there may have been burned Court Houses to consider.

Subject: [BRE] The Rowan-Randolph County Line
I looked at a map of Rowan County, North Carolina, and discovered that the
Rowan-Randolph County Line became the Davidson-Randolph County Line in 1822,
which I guess is the year that Davidson County spun off out the part of old
Rowan County that was east of the Yadkin. This means that one has to study
court records from three counties-Randolph, Rowan, and Davidson-in order to
figure out the whereabouts of the Uwharrie Brethren. I have found that most
of them lived in what is now Randolph County, but quite a few lived in what
is now Davidson County, but you have to go back to Rowan County for many of
the earliest records. In the case of Randolph County one might have to go
back to the Guilford County records. Having never stepped a foot in North
Carolina, it is hard for me to get my bearings. For me, physical geography
is a lot easier to understand than political geography. The names of the
counties kept changing, but all the while the rivers and creeks kept theirs.
