Probably some Brethren families felt differently about the war and
principles involved.
As I read this sentence, I was reminded of Jessamyn West's book, Friendly
Persuasion. This is a story of an Indiana Quaker family who were pacifists.
However, the son, enlisted over the protests of his parents. It made me
wonder how many young men of pacifist families, of several denominations, followed
their own conscience regardless of the doctrine in which they were raised.
And thus, just because a son enlisted or was conscripted and served in the
CW, it does not necessarily follow that their parents, or the pacifist
denomination to which they belonged, were non pacifists.
