I probably lived on Homan Aveune for at least four years. When anyone came to live there we were told to follow certain rules the first you should never go out at night alone. You should never carry much money in your purse.(I believe it was 5 dollars)
One time in the early evening I decided to have a baby shower for one of the Seminary Students. All of the doors locked as you entered the house or building. As I was going upstairs to let someone in without thinking about the door closing and locking I hurried to the outside door. After opening the door I realized I had locked myself out of my own apartment. After knocking on the window for several moments the other gals let us in.I don't know whether anyone remembers Brother Clair Petcher who owned a garage there on the West Side where he prepared cars for most of the students and etc.I had previously met him and he knew my folks from Seminary days.He told me he thought it would be a wise decision if I would move in with his family who owned a pretty big house in Oak Park since the West Side was becoming a pretty unsafe Neighborhood. So several weeks later I did move in with them.About once a month he would invite everyone who attended First Church in for a covered dinner and etc.I always enjoyed going to the different places in Chicago and etc.Since my folks were aware of this every so often especially when he would hear about anything bad happening in Chicago he would call Brother Petcher to make sure I stayed away for those neighborhoods. There was one other Sister that worked for Sears many years.I believe her son was a minister in The Church of The Brethren.
