Courtney:

I have read a number of Mennonite histories, and I never heard of that
claim. The 1749 crossing of the Phoenix carried a large number of Amish
settlers. The Amish had broken from the Mennonites several generations
earlier, so the Mennonites didn't pay their way.

Someone may be mixing up the story of one of the early Mennonite migrations
to PA, such as the un-named "Three Ships" of August 25, 1717, which brought
363 Mennonites to PA, promoted by Martin Kendig and led by Benedict
Brachbill. Or the first Mennonites who came to PA at the invitation of
William Penn a generation earlier, who purchased a large amount of land.
Those were community migrations, but I never read anything about their
finances.

I read second or third hand that the Mennoite Church paid for the fares and
assisted with the settlement in PA of some Swiss and German passengers who
were heading for the colonies. Specific mention was made of the Ship
"Phoenix," which was said to have carried one shipload per year between 1749
and 1753 of said sponsored settlers to Philadelphia. Some families would
almost certainly have become Brethren over time.

Can anyone corroborate this? I believe one of my ancestors might have been
on one of these voyages of the "Phoenix."
