Re: Henry & Barbara Schenk in-laws of Henry Huber
Henry Schenk was born 1/14/1756 in Manor Township and died 9/13/1853 also in
Manor Township. He inherited property on 4/12/1783 from his father John
Schenk II, which was warranted by his grandfather John Schenk I on
6/30/1741. John II lived adjacent Abraham Hare and Andrew Kauffman, both
Mennonites. However, there were many Brethren descendents of Andrew
Kauffman. Andrew's daughter Mary Kauffman married Christian Schenk (son of
John I), the founder of Shanksville (site of flight 93). Barbara Hostetter
was the daughter of Abraham and Catherine Hostetter also of Manor Township.
She was also the granddaughter of Mennonite Bishop Jacob Hostetter (not to
be confused with Jacob Hochstetler who was Amish), who is listed living next
to another property owned by John Schenk I. Jacob died in 1761 in Manor
Township, and Abraham took over his farm in 1755.
Schenk info is from 1/1994 Mennonite Family History article on Schenk
family. Hostetter info is from 4/1983 Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage.
Both families were Mennonite.
