I have on occasion seen the term 'Presbyterian' used in relation to
Pennsylvania Germans. The German Reformed faith was based on the theology
of John Calvin, as was the Presbyterian faith. Both follow a presbyterian
form of church government which does not have the position of bishop (as
opposed to an ecclesiastical form common to Catholics, Anglicans, Lutherans
and Methodists). However, Presbyterians as a denomination were typically
Scotch-Irish. The English version of Presbyterianism was the Congregational
denomination, which included the Puritans.

The question is; are references to Presbyterians in relation to Pennsylvania
Germans a generic term used for Germans who in fact belonged to the German
Reformed faith?
