Hi Wayne,
Haven't heard from you as to your coming to Bedford in October, but maybe I can help you and your wife in November.
Last week there was a letter in the Bedford Gazette that appeared to allude to you. I think Gillian must be badmouthing you to the public. It didn't name you, but said, "I'll be that guy who's taking our history is going to make a mint." I think you should write a letter to the Gazette and tell about your project. Take pictures of the work you have done (if able to be done); otherwise, just tell what you've completed and how the folks can access the records you've completed. Tell them about the computerized records you have and the reason for them. It's time people KNOW that you are performing a SERVICE gratis; and that you have not STOLEN any of the records. Tell them what you did when yoiu took them out of the courthouse, of the numerous records you've catalogued for THEIR CONVENIENCE.
Maybe youi can request that a reporter "shadow" you next time your're in town and document the hours you GIVE to the history, a labor of love, not of greed.
Maybe you could ask Gillian if you could have a meeting with all interested citizens and those who fear you're "robbing Bedford" some afternoon -- as probably most people interested in the history are those who are retired.
This is just an idea I share: In Darby Borough, we had our Historical & Preservation Society monthly meetings in the afternoon, following soup and dessert provided by the president of the society, who never asked to be reimbursed.
(But Bedford could have a fund or rotate members to bring soup and dessert.) Anyone who wanted a sandwich brought their own. This ensured a good number of people. Maybe it might encourage some of the folks who otherwise would go to the Sr.. Center to go get involved and share their expertise and efforts to help preserve Bedford's history. There's just so much brain power and physical energy lying dormant in the "playhouses for older citizens".
Personally, I think the reason the government began "Sr. Centers" was to get this age group out of the main stream of life so that the cultural revolution would not be stopped. It's time we take back our country.
Cordially,
"The Revolutionary"
