When we went to the Mock family genealogy conference several years ago, the
whole group was able to take a tour of Mock cemeteries, including several that
were on private property. The farm where Peter and Elizabeth Mock are
buried is private land, and the original headstones were apparently destroyed by
one of the coal mining companies when it was in control of the land. The
then-current owners had allowed replacement headstones to be displayed, but
were said to be skittish about letting the public in to view them -- there
apparently had been some animosity expressed about what had happened to these
gravesites, but one of the local Mocks was able to make arrangements for our
group to come in.
I don't know what the connection is between our Peter Mock and the Christian
Mock who donated the land for the Mock log church (where the Mock group held
Sunday services), but that was a Brethren congregation. The building is
now used only for special occasions, but my mother-in-law and her sister (both
nee Mock) were thrilled to be able to attend services there and to get photos
of themselves in front of it. I hope the annual Mock genealogy conference
goes back to Bedford County one of these years. Sometimes groups can get
folks into places they'd never manage as individuals, and it was wonderful to
have somebody knowledgeable leading parts of the tour.
So far the only evidence I have about the Brethren connection of these Mocks
is the Mock Log Church erected on Mock land. My husband grew up Brethren,
but the most recent tie came from his Stump ancestors rather than his Mock
line. So I'll keep looking.
Happy hunting.
