Subject: WALTER/HARTINGER CONNECTION
Date: Fri, 20 May 2005 10:52:15 EDT
Hi Ora....as we in genealogy know coincidences abound along the way.. but if
it should turn out that (eventually) I learn that my late husband, GEORGE
FRANKLIN HARTINGER and I are distantly related it just may be too much for my
advanced years, and imagine how confusedly (albeit joyfully?), it would be
received by Connie and our grandaughters!:>).
While I long ago pretty well traced the more recent generations of his
HARTINGER family (and which was published in the HARDIN CO.IOWA HISTORY/1981),
somehow could never get very far regarding the WALTER family who intermarried with
his gggrandfather, JOHN WILLIAM HARTINGER (b.ca 1804) whose children (per
Bible record) were all born in Clearfield, ClearCreek Twp., Fairfield Co.,OH.
Could never get much of a lead on wife, SUSAN WALTER (b. near the time of
husband)...and who, presumably, was born in PA, per census. It wasn't as though I
didn't follow every possible lead but some weren't even certain her name was
"WALTER" (have seen it written WALTERS or even WATERS)..so she has been on the
back burner, more or less. I did however find there in Fairfield Co.,OH the
will of one CASPER WALTER, ...and have a little old scribbled note that one
FREDERICK WALTER, of Clear Creek Twp., that county (narrowed down to where our
HARTINGER "kids" had been born..same place), had 11 children, so thought
possibly one might have been our SUSANNAH.
Looking for something else in the wonderful Somerset Co.,PA LAUREL MESSENGER
INDEX (which you so painstakingly assembled from all my old issues...and
again, many thanks!), I spotted both a "CASPER" and "FREDERICK" WALTER in among the
Family listings.....well, this was just too much to pass up. While Frederick
might not be all that rare a given name, Casper certainly was. So naturally
checked further and found our "mentor of the past", Eber Cockley, had written
an account of CASPER WALTER having been killed by the Indians, and 4 children
carried off (LM's May 1967issue.p.3...some of our earlier HARTINGERs met the
same fate)...mention of his mill in Conocochegue settlement...where? Now if
any of them eventually escaped they surely didn't want to stay around there,
and like so many who had moved from Somerset Co.,PA to southern OH counties, one
CASPER WALTER, JR., might just have been one of them, and one and the same as
turned up in Fairfield Co,OH?.
Then with my supposition that SUSAN might have been the daughter of the
FREDERICK (who was in the same twp., Clear Creek, in Fairfield Co.,OH...with a lot
of children), came across this in the L.M. issue of Nov.1966,pg.4...FREDERICK
WALTER was born 1767 in Germany...on muster roll of the Brothersvalley Militia
dtd. 1798...mar. ELIZABETH BARNDT (some of those came to Perry Co.,OH)...died
there in 1853, leaving a widow (what a strong woman if original and only
wife...still living?) and sixteen children! Not a lowly 11 as fellow of that
name in Fairfield Co.,OH had...but sounds like he might have inherited that
proclivity:>) and been of that very same family.
Then there was MICHAEL WALTER...ancestor of many natives of Somerset Co.,PA
(per "Laurel Messenger" Nov.1976, Vol.27,pg.4)...and elsewhere, came to America
about 1754..found his way to Hagerstown, MD and (of all people) mar.
CATHERINE ANKENY...of that same Somerset Co.,PA duo -ANKENY/PHILLIPPI union, no
doubt). ...and with whom I have a distant relationship as you may recall (and have
copies of old letters mentioning these people)...for a descendant of their
MICHAEL WALTER... was one JOHN WALTER (1800-1876) and PHOEBE ANN HUSBAND...d/o
famous warrior ISAAC "TUSCAPE" HUSBAND and my kinswoman, NANCY ANNA KING...as is
to be found in our joint CRAMER-KING history of 2001!
So shall be concentrating more on Somerset Co.,PA to see if I might get a
lead on our SUSANNAH WALTER who mar. JOHN WILLIAM HARTINGER, probably in Clear
Creek Twp.,Fairfield Co., OH (she said to have been born in PA)....and who might
be one of those 16 children of one FREDERICK of the same place. (Both CASPER
& HENRY WALTER, SR. on 1810 tax List of Fairfield Co.,OH, too, and trying to
check out the later, also.).
Of course, if anyone has any suggestions or outright connecting data it goes
without saying, of course, I would be most appreciative of receiving it!
Thanks once again, Ora, for your wonderful help along the way.
