I have just joined this list and this represents my first attempt at
posting a question.

I notice in the archives many postings relating to families of Stark
Co. Ohio, and I look forward to plowing through them to see what I
can learn.

However, to state my intersts, I am descended from one Philip Thomas
who married Polly Hoover at or near Canton, Stark Co., on 12 July
1827. I have no birth or death dates for either of these ancestors.
They were in Coshocton Co., OH in 1849 when their daughter Ellen
married Robert Alexander Willman. Their daughter was my great
grandmother.

What makes this research project a challenge is that I have collected
records or reports of the marriages of five different Polly/Mary
Hoovers during that time period:

Mary Hoover b. 1814 Ohio m. John W. Thomas. I don't know where I got
this and I do need to track it down!

Polly Hoover (1810 PA-1882) of Plain Twp., m. William Coleman/Kuhlman
3 June 1828.

My own Polly Hoover, m. Philip Thomas 12 Jul 1827. They were in Paris
Twp in the 1830 census.

Polly Hoover dau. of William Hoover of Paris Twp. m. 25 Dec 1823
Major Henry Loutzenhisor [Ohio Repository 1 Jan 1824].

Mary Hoover, daughter of Judge John Hoover, who married Anthony Housel.

Except for the last two, I haven't a clue which Hoover families
claimed these girls.

I do note with interest a number of connections between the Hoovers
and the Thomases of those parts and times.

I find one note that "The Nimishillen church was organized by Bishop
John Gans in 1804. From 1804 to 1825 services were held regularly at
two week intervals in
the homes and barns of about 25 members -- David Snyder, Conrad Brumbaugh
(Joseph royer later bought Conrad Brumbaugh's home), David Ebie,
William Hoover, John Sheidler, Peter Ebie, Jacob Snyder, Martin Houser,
Joseph Schneider, Widow Thomas, George Swinehart, Andrew Christ,
Daniel Brown, Jacob Funk, Michael Flory, Widow Leiser, John Hershey,
David Bixler, John Thomas, Jacob Replogle, Jacob Bauer, John Garl,
Daniel Markley, Daniel Bowser, Joseph Showalter. (Brethren Roots, Winter 1998)"

John Hoover--apparently the Judge John Hoover--was executor for
Samuel Thomas of Plain Twp. in 1822. His daughter Anna married a
John Thomas in 1832, and after she died, he married Judge John
Hoover's daughter Rebecca. This John apparently was the father of the
Mary who married Anthony Housel.

Looking at the ages of the various Hoovers in Stark County in 1830,
and ruling out the ones I know weren't the fathers, I suspect the
following were the fathers of the above mentioned "stray"
Marys/Pollys who married shortly before then.

William of Nimishillen Twp.
Solomon of Sandy Twp.
David of Lexington.

If any of you can help me straighten out the Hoovers of Stark
County--and know something of the Thomases, too--I'd greatly
appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Wendell Huffman
