I understand someone asked about the location of Hays Corner in
Montgomery Co., OH. It is at the intersection of Wolf Creek Pike and
Diamond Mill Rd. on the Perry / Madison Twp. border. Originally it had a
store and was called Hays Store with a post office from Sept. 19, 1851 to
Aug. 25, 1859. Isaac Hay (1826-1891) was the postmaster at that time and
later on he held the same post in Brookville a few miles further NW. He
became VERY wealthy having owned the largest whiskey distillery in the area.
Built a mansion on Hay Ave. in brookville that still stands as the Masonic
Temple. He lost all of his money and ended his days sweeping the town
streets.
The Hay family came from Woodbury twp., Bedford Co., PA to the area
in 1816. There is a family cemetery about 1/4 mile south of this corner on
Diamond Mill rd. called the Hay/Pfoutz Cemetery where Isaac and his wife
Sarah Ann Weaver are buried.
