Sulfnbk.exe Virus Warning

Published May, 2001
Updated December, 2001

This warning originated in Europe and is now circulating in an english
version. This file is designed by Microsoft to restore long file names in
the event the program which enables this function is damaged. This is a
legitimate program and by itself constitutes no threat to your system. By
deleting this file you may make it impossible for Windows to restore the
long file names you use for all your documents in the event something
happens to your registry to disable this feature. This file can be
restored...see the Symantec/Norton link for instructions.

Lately this warning has been followed by another email with a "replacement"
sulfnbk.exe file. However, this one is the virus/worm W32.Magistr. If you
click on this file then your computer will be infected with a version of
W32.Magistr. Remember any .exe (program file) can be infected by a virus or
replaced by a worm, including this one, but if you keep your software
updated it will identify the Magistr virus.

Again, if you haven't done it yet don't delete this file as it is a
necessary part of your Windows program.
