the Brethren were in this area early -in the 1750s -
at that time there was no clear line between the colonies -in fact, there
was such a dispute, that Michael Danner (who lived just across the
Susquehanna from Lancaster PA -probably not as far as York PA) was dragged
down to Baltimore to jail, because he claimed to live in Pennsylvania. The
Pennsylvania Governor intervened and had him sets free.
The Conococheague is a creek (not really a small river) that flows south
out of the valley east of the tall Pennsylvania mountains, into the Potomac
River just west of Hagarstown MD. Similarly, the Antietam Creek (made
popular by the Civil War battle fought at the Brethren Church on it) flows
south from Waynesboro PA into the Potomac, east of Hagarstown MD (west of
South Mountain -the Blue Ridge range on the west side of Middletown Valley
-thus Frederick Co MD line). Hagarstown sits on a low ridge between the
creeks. Both vallleys were settled by the Brethren -mostly in the lower
reaches of the creeks (Washington Co, Maryland), but many up into the
headwaters (Pennsylvania).
