According to Ethel Harshbarger Weddle's book "Pleasant Hill," Brethren
families first came to the area of Virden and Girard, Ill., in 1863, though
other non-Brethren settled there earlier. Also, as early as 1844 Brethren
"horseback preacher" Elder Isham Gibson traveled through Morgan, Cass,
Sangamon and Macoupin counties, according to the book.
(Ethel Harshbarger Weddle was a cousin of my grandmother, Dortha Snell
Stutsman.)
