My daughter, a bunch of her friends, and I made the hike to the top of
Half-Dome in Yosemite Park two weeks ago. On the trail we were joined by a
couple of hundred Old Order Baptist Brethren young adults, mainly from the
Modesto area. The women were all wearing the long dresses, with the short
cape-like appendage at the shoulders, and the small white prayer
bonnets. The men all wore long pants and many had the typical hat. If you
are familiar with the hike, you know how strenuous and hot it is (you climb
about 5,000 feet in 6-7 miles, with the last part pulling yourself up via
cables mounted on the side of the rock). At least most of the women in
long dresses had hiking boots on underneath and the men had short-sleeved
(mainly striped) shirts. I was amazed at how well everyone did, although
most of the women looked pretty beat at the end of the hike. I suspect not
having hats with brims (and thus exposed to the full sun in the afternoon),
may have been even more of a problem for the women than the long dresses.
Is anyone here Old Order? I was surprised at the large number of young
folk from the Modesto area. Is this an annual event?
