My grandmother (whose mother was a "healer", and grandfather had been
Amish) told of the "string around the egg" cure for cholera. No one has
touched on the powers of a corpse, passing a sick child through a fork in
a tree...but this could go on forever. Of course these practices and
beliefs
came to this country with the people who used them and passed them on.
What else did they have in the way of medical treatment when the average
family never raised all the children they brought into the world. Or
appendicitis
was almost sure death, and giving birth was an ever present threat to the
life
of the mother.
