reply from Emmert Bittinger;
Ceder and Stone, you are absolutely correct. The battlefield church is not
the Antietam Church, but the Mumma church. It is sometimes called the Antietam
Battlefield Church, which is an accurate designation, but one not derived from the
Brethren. Also, not well known on this board is the fact that the Mumma Church was
a preaching point and under the administration of the MANOR CONGREGATION, in which
territory it was located, and which meeting house is one of the "classic" stone
churches of the of Germanic style. The old Brownsville Church also was constructed
of stone, but is now removed and replaced by a new brick structure at Brownsville,
5 miles from Burkittsville and Pleasant View. The Antietam Congregation originally
included the Brethren populations along the Antietam Creek in northern edge of
Washington Co., Md. down to and including Beaver Creek and the Antietam settlements
across the line in Pennsylvania, centering at the Prices Church which still stands,
near Waynseboro, md. and which is only a couple miles from the "Snow Hill" Cloister
which was an extension of the Ephrata Cloister. All very ancient Brethren
settlements. Emmert
