This is very interesting. I commented to one of my research colleagues as
to the possibility of our Bitner & Lasley ancestors (Brethren) fleeing west
as did my Quaker Noblitts. Was the practice of fines in lieu of service a
common practice throughout New England or was it restricted to MD?

Subject: Frederick MD Treason Trial

I just read about the Fredrick MD Treason Trial of 1781 in the book
Allegheny Passage by Emmert Bittinger. I was shocked to say the least. I am
seeking more information about the records of those Brethren and other
consciensious objectors during the Revolutionary War who resided in
Washington and Frederick County Maryland and who were required to pay fines
in leui of joining the militia. Can anyone direct me to where I might
research this information?

Thank you,
Lonny J. Watro
