My line has similar stories although on the Brethren side they apply to the
Civil War vs Revolutionary. My ancestors instruction (Daniel Barnhart, he
was an Elder) to his son and a cousin were to serve if drafted but be sure
you are not responsible for taking a life. Both were in the VA infantry.
Benjamin died after being captured, but his cousin was captured and told his
story to the commanding officer who sent him to Indiana with three men who
were going home.

My great Uncle was a Dunker Minister. He had eleven boys. When the war came
they
asked him what to do. He told them "Don't volunteer but if drafted, go
serve. Try
to get a job/position? that is not required to take a life. Try to get in
the
Medical corps or something similiar" I don't know if this was Church policy
or
just his personal policy but that's what he told them. Earl Taylor
