Maureen,

Fred's reference to a Weidman in Lancaster county may explain a copy I made
several years ago on Naturalizations in Lancaster Co. 1740-1750. I was
beginning research on Wrightsman name which was, in very early years,
Reitzmann or something very similar. The Angeclized name came in many
forms. This item lists Martin Wightman and two others who being of Quaker
"or such who conscientiously scruple to take an oath.... being also
foreigners"..complied with terms of the Act of Parliament. They were
naturalized on 19 Sept. 1740. This would possibly fit in with the Martin
Weidman mentioned by Fred. One reason for the Weidman...becoming Wightman
in the extraction...posssibly because the German d is pronounced t.
Someone who is more conversant in German could tell you if this is the case
only at the end of a word... After Aug. 1749 these people would have been
in York Co....since it was formed then from Lancaster.
Taken from The Codorus Chronicles..v. 1-4 ...York Co. PA. p. 26. (Sorry,
I did not note the vol.)
