You asked, "Was it a common practice for the church to have a pool to buy
of the Civil War? I have always understood that my ggrandfather paid
to take his place but now I am wondering if the money came from a pool.
anybody have a clue what the price would have been and to whom it would
been paid. What was the practice?"
Oma (Martin) Lehman was the source for the story about pooling money to buy
members of the Oakland Church of the Brethren out of the Civil War that I
included in my Martin message yesterday. I will try to ask her if she
knows any more about the practice the next time I am in Ohio or perhaps
someone who lives in or near Greenville could ask her. By the way, I
spelled her first name wrong yesterday. It is Oma, not Omah. There are
probably not many people still living like Oma who have a set of
grandparents who were born in the 1820s.
