For anyone interested in Franklin County, PA during the Civil War
and the years just preceding that, a must visit site is

Jefferson.Village.Virginia.EDU/vshadow2/

This web page deals with the Valley of the Shadow Project being
conducted by Univ. Of VA. It contains fully searchable public records,
the 1860 census, newspapers, diaries, church records, etc. for
Chambersburg and other Franklin County areas. The same is done for
Stanton, VA so that it becomes very easy to compare and contrast how
these two cities felt about various issues that affected their daily
lives. For a genealogist it is a gold mine for digging into your family
history if they lived in Franklin County during the late 1850's and
early 1860's.

Be sure to visit the "JAIL" which is the home of the Kittochtinny
Historical Society on King Street. Very nice volunteers who know their
way around the records. Despite being burnt to the ground by those
"nasty rebs", most of the courthouse records survived.

have a nice visit ... regards ... gary grove
