Brethen Encyclopedia has sections on Jacob Berkey, Berkey COB PA, and
Berkey(Birkey) Family on p. 119 of Vol 1.

Under the entry for the Berkey family, it says "Jacoab Berkey (Burki) arrived
in Berks Co PA in the mid-18th century. He married Elizabeth Blough, d/o
immigrant Christian Blough. They had settled near Berlin, Somerset Co., by
the time their last son, Peter, was born in 1782. Originally Swiss
Mennonites, they later became German Seventh Day Baptists. Jacob died in
1805... "There is more on folks of this surname, but Peter is not mentioned
again. Nor does he appear in the ministerial/elder/deacon lists , though
there are 10 other Berkeys. there.Nobody is listed as Barkey or Birkey. There
are a couple of Burkeys, but no Peter.

Because Brethren Encyclopedia said the family was Swiss Mennonite, I checked
Amish & Amish Mennonite Genealogies by Gingerich & Kreider, and there are many
pages devoted to Berkey/Barkey/Burgi folks, including 10 named Peter . One is
identified as born 1822 BK21415 married to Anna F. Porter. That page says
BK21415 was in Somerset Co PA, lived 1822-4/16/1907. m. Anna E. Porter with a
reference to St Paul MN. Footnote says "Captain Peter" - first packet on
canal through Johnstown. This Peter Berkey is identified as s/o John Berkey
and first wife Anna Berkebile. (2d wife of John was Elizabeth Ebbert).
There is more on this family but I didn't know what you wanted to know.

I hope that helps. Jan T
