Hi Eric from Karen in MD. Saw your note about COB and slavery. I was as
surprised as you about the Brethren and slaves. I will never forget the
day I saw the STONER family with slaves, and then the time I saw a
STONER from the brethren folks was in Rev War and in Civil War. About
fell off the genie chair that time.
Saw your note about SUMMERS family. I do not know anything about
the Brethren SUMMERS family but have an unidentified group of SUMMERS
with COE, LAMAR, RIDGELEY, FULLER, CRAIG, THRASHER in Frederick Co MD
near the town of Frederick. They all owned land near GROSSNICKLE,
LEATHERMAN, COBLENTZ, ROUTZAHN,etc. The area was once called Harmony
Grove. Some folks say that many of the neighbors are Brethren or of
another faith United Brethren. The relatives of the cem insist that the
family were Catholic. Do you have any of those surnames in your
lines??? I have been helping folks since 1993 work on restoration of the
family graveyard called JOHNSON/Hawbottom(location on road). Nice to
hear from you again.
Regards from Karen

I was quite surprised to find that the 1790 PA census indicated that one
of my ancestors, Peter Summers, had a slave in his household. Peter
Summers was Amish, as far as I can tell. Does anyone know whether the
Amish Summers (also spelled as Summer, Somers, or Sommers), are closely
connected with the Dunkard family with the same surname? My "Amish" line
actually has a number of surnames with Brethren affinities (Summers,
Zug, Blank, Ritter, and Bollinger); I'd link to hear from anyone who has
information on Amish-COB links, especially involving those families.
