Although my surname isn't one of the Brethren, I thought that this might
be of interest, and a possibility something to consider when looking for a
reason as to why an ancestor was assigned a certain first name.

I have a Great-grandfather Asahel Adams Tewksbury b: 1836. There was
no ADAMS in our ancestry so I thought that he was named after President
Adams.
While going through the census records for the small town where he lived I
ran
across a resident by the name of Asahel Adams. It was undoubtedly a
prominent
neighbor that he was named after, and wasn't a relative at all; at least not
that
I could identify as such.

There has been a lot written about naming patterns. I have not seen a
pattern, at
least not in my mother's Berkey Brethren line.
