Dear Gini . . . this is just wonderful. I have to thank you so much. I
am a BUTLER researcher, located in Annapolis, Md. Among a vast array of
files handed down from my great grandmother (Sarah Butler Palmer,
1835-1911 ME>IL) and her only child, Walter B. Palmer (1868-1932 IL) was
a wonderful ca. 1855 photo of her grandfather. This photo is very well
preserved, and in quite perfect mint condition. On the back of the
photo, about 4x6 and mounted on heavy paper-board as per those times, is
written:
"Photo of our grandfather, Benjamin F. Butler 1778-1855. To my cousin,
from Olive E. Butler, 1898."
And so you can appreciate my interest in learning the identity of Olive.
You have graciously been my savior! I thank you. I wonder if you are
by chance connected to this Edwards family or to Olive, and thus a
Butler lineage? And how might I go about reviewing the book: A Gen.
Record of the Desc. of John Edwards by L.N. Edwards, Toronto, CAN 1916.
? I wonder if the Edwards book contains information as to desc. of
Olive, her children (who would be Butler desc.) likely born around the
time of the Civil War, and generations forward, etc.? You did not
mention death year for Olive, and very likely she was still alive at the
time the 1916 book was written. What else can you tell me about it?
How can I review it? I wonder if NEHGS (am a member) has it in their
loan library? Could I borrow it to review from someone of the Edwards
list who might own it, or provide copies of relevant pages?
Standing beside our fireplace is a wonderful iron brass headed fire
place tongs which belonged to Benj. and was always beside his fireplace
in Franklin Co. Maine and has been passed down for 200 years. As a
matter of interest, Benj. was married to Huldah Bradford, a direct desc.
of Gov. Wm. Bradford, and so Sarah and her son were quite interested in
their family history, were members of the Mayflower Society, DAR, and
etc. Their documents, letters and correspondence which they accumulated
over a lifetime of writing to relatives is truly prodigious, and as yet
I have not even begun to touch the surface of reviewing them . . .
although I have been working on these things since the 1960s.
One of my tasks is to trace all desc. of Benjamin, likely not possible,
as he and Huldah had eleven children born between 1802-1823. But you
never know, and Sarah did leave a great deal of information about her
cousins, and Aunts and Uncles.
I am very interested is sharing information with anyone on the BUTLER or
BRADFORD lists who would be desc. from:
BENJAMIN BUTLER (1746/49 Martha's Vineyard - 1828/29 Farmington ME) &
AMY DAGGETT 1749 Martha's Vineyard - 1795 Farmington) . . . they had 13
children . . . most particularly 5th ch., BENJAMIN F. BUTLER & his wife
HULDAH BRADFORD.
Thank you again, and best wishes for a wonderful New Year and beyond.
Peter Burrows, Annapolis, MD
