Gen. W. B. Bradford. Ex-Cavalry Officer
ROME, Jan. 16 (AP) William Brooks Bradford, a retired major general who commanded United States troops during the Trieste dispute in 1952 and 1953, died Thursday in a Rome hospital. He was 68 years old.
The hospital said he had been suffering from Parkinson's disease for more than a year and had died after developing complications of a bronchial nature.
General Bradford was graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1916 and attended the French cavalry school at Saumur from 1922 to 1923.
During World War II he served in the Pacific theater as chief of staff of the 2d Cavalry Division and as assistant division commander of the 99th and 25th Infantry Divisions. From 1945 to 1949 he commanded the First Cavalry Brigade in Japan.
He was named commanding general of United States troops in Trieste in 1952, a post he held through 1953. Both Italy and Yugoslavia claimed the city. An accord eventually gave the city to Italy and the surrounding countryside to Yugoslavia.
General Bradford retired in 1953. He and his wife, the former Mrs. Lois M. Blatt, who survives, had resided in Rome in recent years. The hospital said the body would be returned to the United States for burial.
