More on Nathaniel and family:
BRADFORD of SOUTH CAROLINA AND MISSIPPI
Nathaniel Bradford, born Virginia, son of Thomas Bradford of Virginia and Northampton, N.C., with his brothers Henry and Thomas, moved to S. Carolina. He was residing in Claremont County, which later became Sumter, in 1790, and was the head of a family consisting of himself, one son over 16, one son under 16, three daughters, his wife and 15 slaves. He made his will in Sumter August 3, 1807; legatees were sons: Nathaniel, Jr.; John, and Richard; daus.: Mary Drake and Sarah Ream. Exrs.. wife and Absalom Williams.
John Angel Bradford, was born in Sumter County, S.C., Sept. 16, 1764. His oldest son "Nathaniel" born ca. 1785, was probably named for John Angel's father and evidently he is the son of "John" mentioned in Nathaniel's will.
Nathaniel Bradford, son of John A. Bradford, on July 4, 1854 in the Sumter county district of S.C., as administrator of his mother Mary Bradford's estate, made the following declaration to obtain arrears of pension due her as widow of John Angel Bradford, under Act of 1838, to wit: "That he is the son of Mary Bradford, widow of John Angel Bradfor, private in S.C. Militia Revolutionary War; believes he served more than 2 years. His father died in 1829 and his mother died 19 May 1848, leaving this declarent, Middleton Bradford, William Wade Bradford and Mary Ann Mercy Bradford, the only four surviving children of his parents. births and deaths of his parents, as well as births and deaths of his brothers and sisters, are recorded in the Family Bible which belonged to his mother, and which record is in the hadwriting of his brother, William Wade Bradford. Has no knowledge of the date of his parents marriage. He recently visited the graves of his parents located on his plan!
tation in Sumter District and found their deaths as above stated inscribed on their tombstones."
COPIES OF TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTIONS:
IN MEMORY OF JOHN A. BRADFORD, who was born in Virginia Sept. 16, 1764, and died December 5th, 1829, near Sumterville, S.C. He joined Gen. Marion's Brigade at the age of 14 years and was present at the battle of Monks Corner, Tyne's defeat and Eutaw. He saved the life of Capt. W. R. Davis from the uplifted sword of a Britton and captured and delivered two chargers to Genl. Marion. After the Revolution he married Mary Mitchell, became a member of M. E. Church and died in the full hope of a blissful immortality, leaving nine children to revere his memory and imitate his example.
