THE ROBERT BRADFORD FAMILY OF GREENE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
ROBERT BRADFORD, pioneer settler in what is now Greene Co., Pa., was of
English descent, born ca 1730, died 1802 (probably in Oct.) in Franklin
Twp., Greene Co., Pa. His wife was MARGARET___________who survived her
husband and was still living in Feb. 1805. Burial place unknown.
Children of ROBERT and MARGARET as listed in his will:
JAMES BRADFORD, eldest son and veteran of the Revolution, born Jan. 1, 1754,
died Apr. 18, 1822 in Whiteley Twp., Greene Co., Pa. Married (1) BARBARA
YOHO (2) CATHERINE FRY ODENBAUGH
ELISABETH BRADFORD, born Mar. 13, 1757, died Nov. 15, 1839, married JOHN FEE
2-18-1785
JOHN BRADFORD, born Mar. 30, 1759, died Mar. 22, 1820, married MARY
GILLISPIE 7-15-1782
THOMAS BRADFORD, born ca 1760, died Sept __ 1812, Married LYDIA ________
WILLIAM BRADFORD, youngest son, born 1767, died Mar. 26, 1830, married
ELIZABETH JOHNSON, Mar 1, 1792
DIANAH BRADFORD, born 1768, died Oct. 13, 1822, married THOMAS HEAVRIN Feb
22, 1793.
JAMES was the only child who remained in Greene Co., Pa. The others moved
to Bourbon and Bracken counties in Kentucky in the 1790's. JOHN left
Kentucky and settled near Dayton, Ohio.
WILLIAM, youngest son of ROBERT and MARGARET BRADFORD, told his family that
the BRADFORDS came from Northern Ireland to Redstone fort (now Brownsville,
Pa.) when he (WILLIAM) was 7 years of age. WILLIAM was born in 1767 which
would make the date of arrival 1774. This would determine that the
birthplace of all the known children was overseas and that the entire family
made the voyage across the Atlantic.
ROBERT took up a tract of land of 261 1/4 acres which was patented as
"Pleasure" in what was then Cumberland Township, Washington Co, Pa. (later
Franklin Twp. Greene Co., Pa.). Warrant granted Dec. 23, 1785, surveyed May
5, 1786, patent granted Sept. 18, 1790. This land was at the headwaters of
Sugar Run and two miles South of Fort Jackson (Waynesburg). The heirs of
ROBERT BRADFORD sold this tract to the Barnes family after ROBERT's demise
in 1802.
Two of ROBERT's children who left Greene Co., Pa. to make their homes in
Kentucky had descendants who made names for themselves in history:
WILLIAM, youngest son of ROBERT, whose granddaughter, LAURA EMILY BRADFORD,
married GEORGE CATLETT MARSHALL, Sr., and they were parents of GEORGE
CATLETT MARSHALL, Jr., Chief of Staff in World War II, Secretary of State
under President Truman, and author of the Marshall Plan.
WILLIAM, youngest son of ROBERT, had two sons, JONATHAN JOHNSON BRADFORD,
and JOSHUA TAYLOR BRADFORD who were noted doctors and surgeons in Kentucky.
ELISABETH BRADFORD, daughter of ROBERT, married JOHN FEE. JOHN and
ELISABETH FEE had a grandson, JOHN GREGG FEE, who founded Berea College,
Berea, Kentucky in 1855.
