BRADFORD, Capt. John, noted guerrilla, arrested in Jackosn, TN, recently while on the way to Henderson County; he was taken from the hands of the sheriff and killed; he had been charged with murder and counterfeiting and was a bold, bad man. It is said to have been done by the Loyal League. (Memphis Daily Appeal, 16 June 1869.) Jack Bradford was 26 at his death, began his career as guerrilla at 17 years; he was a native of Jackson, TN; his father died before the was; in 1862 the Yankees plundered his mother's home and he vowed vengeance against the whole race; waylaid and killed couriers, picking off every man who straggled his way; was soon joined by other youths and soon had 60 in his group. He was the terror of the Yankee Army at Jackson. Often disguised himself as chicken peddler and entered the enemy lines.
