Joshua & Hannah Bradford: 2nd cousins, farming residents of Meduncook (now
Friendship)
Maine. On May 27, 1758, Mr. Bradford wass in his clearing pounding corn
into meal ( thus
probably not hearing the warning cannon from the fort.) One account states
that he did not fear the
Indeans of locality because he saved the life of their cheif, who had fallen
through the ice of the
creek and was drowning. He was surprised a a band of Indians and killed.
Then Indians then
entered the cabin and killed Mrs. Bradford. Melatia Age 14 hid behind a
door (one account) or
under the bed(another account) with Elisha. When the child cried she made
a dash for the fort with
the Indians persuing. Sha was badly wounded her two lower ribs were severed
by a throwen
tomahawk, but she was rescued by a soldier from the fort. She recovered
two sons were captured
and taken to Canada. They were later exchanged and made there way home
with great difficulty.
Winslow was killed at the same time as his parents.
