Here is what I have:
PASTE
Research on the Bradford name ends up in Yorkshire, England with the
name being variously spelled Bradforth or Bradfourth in the 14th
Century. This seems to indicate a common etymological origin with names
like Gifford, Clifford and Stafford, which were if I am not mistaken
minor Norman families who took the Anglo-Saxon names of locations in
England shortly after the conquest. The earliest mention I can find of
the name was in an old copy of Cuttlers New York Geneaology (a 19th
Century imprint you may be able to find at a Family History Center).
This mentioned a Bradford who was archbishop of York in the 13th or 14th
Century. That particular reference, if it can be confirmed, gives a lot
of weight to the theory that the Bradfords were an Anglo-Norman family.
Irish Bradfords are almost certainly descendants of this line rather
than progeny. It was not uncommon for wealthy or lesser aristocratic
English families to take up lands in Ireland, but it was extremely rare
for that progression to work the other way around. This is almost all
conjecture based on a couple of facts I can recall from my research.
Since my reasoning and memory can both be faulty, I'd welcome any
corrections based on more substantial data.
- Robert Bradford [Bradford3]
William Bradford married Elizabeth Chambers on Apr. 12, 1719 in St.
Peter's Church in Leeds, Yorkshire, England [Bradford2]. From this
marriage there were five children born:
- Ralph Bradford (b. Dec. 12, 1719/20) born in Mabate, a neighborhood
east of Leeds

parish, about 7 mi. SE of Leeds.
- Thomas Bradford (b. c1722) baptized Mar. 26, 1722 in Methley parish.
- Elizabeth Bradford (b. Mar. 8, 1725) born in Quarry Hill, a
neighborhood east of Leeds.
- John Bradford (b. Jan. 31, 1726) born in Quarry Hill.
Thomas Bradford m. Elizabeth Fielding on Dec. 29, 1743, and together

John Bradford was born in Quarry Hill, east of Leeds, Yorkshire, England

teens, went to work in the silk mills (his father being a member of the
firm). About the year 1766 (when he was 21), John was the sea captain
of a vessel, until 1773. On leaving the water he gave his attention to
farming. He served in the Revolutionary War under Captain Thomas
Berry's company of the 8th Virginia Regiment. He enlisted December 15,
1776 and was discharged September 16, 1777. In 1778 he bought 230
acres of land in Hardy County, Virginia, on Patterson Creek.
In 1778 John m. Johana Regina Hannah Shrout (b. May 17, 1762; d. c1843)
and they had eleven children, all born in Virginia. In 1807, they
brought the younger children to Ohio, settling on White Women,
Coschoctron County, later settling in Highland Township, Muskingum
County, Ohio, where the four older sons had already settled. John died
at age 85; Hannah died at age 81. Both are buried in Ohio. Most of
their children lived in McCarty Township, Coschocton County, Ohio
[Bradford1, Bradford2].

Ohio.

with John and Hannah, but returned to Virginia, and convinced the other

County, West Virginia). He married Mary Stingley (b. Mar. 6, 1790; d.
Apr. 19, 1813) in Hardy County, Virginia in 1805. George's parents had
moved to Ohio in 1807 taking several younger children with them. After
his brother Peter returned to Virginia and convinced other Bradfords to
follow to Ohio in 1813, only George and his older sister Nancy Bradford
Tucker remained in Virginia. A few years later, the Tuckers also moved
to Ohio. Mary Bradford then died giving birth to her fourth son,
Daniel.
George remarried to Elizabeth Schell (b. Nov. 3, 1797; d. Dec. 17, 1874)

preceded them to Grant County. Son John had died in Virginia. Daughter
Rachael had married and moved to Cumberland, Maryland. George settled
on a quarter section southeast quarter of section 16, Washington
Township. The Fairview Church and cemetery was built on the northeast
corner his farm, and both George and Elizabeth are buried there. The

> He married a Miss Strouse & they had 11 children.
Yes, I formerly had "Strouse" but I've been convinced by someone who
researched it more than I that the proper spelling of the name is
"Shrout." (Her first name and dates all matched; same lady.)
> The one I know was James B. Bradford, born June 25, 1800 & married
> Crestine Leeper in 1825.
I don't have the middle initial "B" and my bithdate is slightly at
odds. However, we may have read from sources with abbreviations and
"Jun" and "Jan" are pretty close. (I can't resolve the 1800/1801.)
> They had 8 children & I need info on them as well.
Sorry, but I have nothing on his children. However, I can put you in
contact with my sources (if you wish) and possibly one of them can help
you further. Write back if interested.
