For newspapers you can go to the county in question or the local library for
archives. Some are just laying around; some are microfisched. Lots of work
because, at least the old papers I've read, there are almost no headlines.
Everything is in little paragraphs, one after another-- but interesting
reading!
The Library of Congress, Division of Maps, on the other hand, has all sorts of
information that has to do with *maps* and related items, such as atlases and
gazettes. You have to know the state, county, and township before they can
find specific info for you, but they will, for a fee, actually make copies for
you. (I've archived the address and don't have time to retrieve it now. Just
run a search engine for their on-line address.) And actually, they'll copy a
whole county's worth of things, but that would get costly!
