Regarding the history of Ebenezer Sherwood and Hannah Bradford's daughter
Orilla, the following is quoted from "The Messinger Family" by Reniger, p. 102
regarding their lives:
"The father of Orilla (Streator) Messenger, Alpheus Streator [my note here -
Alpheus Streator was Orilla's second spouse after her first spouse John Bonney
deceased], had been born in Becket, Masachusetts on April 22, 1765 and had
married in Becket, Anna Lyman. This family and their seven children were one
of the first families to remove to Windham, Ohio in 1811. Anna (Lyman)
Streator died in Windham on March 13, 1813. Alpheus married second, Orilla
(Sherwood) Bonney, widow of John Bonney on October 16, 1816 at Windham, Ohio.
Orilla Sherwood had married first, John Bonney at Cornwall, Connecticut in
1798, and they had removed to Nelson, Ohio in 1813 where he died in 1814,
leaving the widow with eight children.
John and Orilla Bonney had left Cornwall, Connecticut in company with
others, with their teams of oxen and horses and cows, and started for Ohio in
the summer of 1813. They went by way of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Warren,
Trumbull County, Ohio, and through Southington, and finally arrived at Nelson
with a log house and barn on it. John Bonney died the second Winter in
Nelson, and Orilla was left without a provider or provision. In the spring
they lived for three days and three nights on the milk of one cow with a
little soft maple syrup. Two old ladies from Windham brought them a large
bowlful of bread and cakes. Flour at this time was fifteen dollars a barrel,
and a very scarce item."
If anyone connects or has further information on this family, would love
to learn more about them. Happy hunting all!
