Subject: [BRADFORD-L] Rev. Richard Bradford
Date: Sun, 24 May 1998 05:25:23
There do not seem to be any other folks researching the line of Rev.
Richard Bradford, Surrey, New York State and Lower Canada. My GGM was
Helen Melvina Bradford, a granddaughter of Richard, who married my GGF
James Bisset of Old Machar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
I have a copy of the book "Glimpses of the Life and Work of the Reverend
Richard Bradford as Scholar, School Principal, Chaplain Priest of the
Church of England and S.P.G. Missionary" by Grace D. McGibbon.
Richard Bradford was born in Surrey, England in 1752. Midshipman under
Capt. Cook. Then became Divinity student -- ordained Priest at Norwich
Cathedral in 1788 by Bishop Bagot -- Army Chaplain -- School Principal --
Rector in New York State.
He ministered to Lachute District (LC) 1805 - 1808. Rector at Sorel 1808 -
1811. Returned to Ottawa Valley, resuming Lachute ministerings especially
during War of 1812 -- celebrated Holy Communion and officiated at many
marriages, baptisms, etc., until 1816. He died at Montreal, 1817. Buried
in Papineau Avenue Military Cemetary.
Richard was married to Sarah Jeffrey, 1766-1822. Daughter of Rev. John
Jeffrey, Vicar of Ludham, Norfolk, England.
This book contains listings of the various Bradford descendents, spouses,
etc., as well as a listing of the many people mentioned in his papers.
Within reason, I'm happy to check on Bradfords, or spouses who are
associated with this line. Please e-mail me privately, and I'll post to
the list as well if the information appears useful to more than one person.
