Kay,

You can find mention of this story in E. J. Sutherland's Pioneer
Recollections, The History of Pound, One Mullins Family and several other
places I'm sure. However, most of the stories are of Andrew Jackson "Brandy
Jack" Mullins uncle, "Counterfeiting" Sol Mullins. In E.J. Sutherland's
Book it states from Andrew Jackson Mullins' son, George Washington Mullins:
My father served in the Yankee army but I do not know what company or who
its officers were. He moved from Bold Camp to the Ghose place on Alley's
Creek when I was very small. He lived there until he got into trouble with
the government and was sent to the penitentiary for counterfeiting. While
he was gone my stepmother and the children moved to Caney Ridge and when my
father came back he bought the land and lived there the rest of his life. I
was about twenty years old when we moved to Caney Ridge. My father is
buried there any my mother on Bold Camp.

The story on Counterfeiting Sol Mullins goes like this: He made money under
a cliff near where Press Harris now lives. Several years ago some bones
were found under that cliff but nobody knows whose bones they were. In
making money he used types or molds and would strike the money in these
molds. The money was made out of zinc, tin and other metals mixed with
silver. They told me that Sol and grandfather John Mullins had to leave
North Carolina because of making counterfeit. At one time they had Sol
indicted in Pike County, KY, and Russell County, VA, over making
counterfeit. He was just a little bit of a man and mighty quick spoken.
They said when he was brought before the judge in Pikeville the judge asked
him if he had any of the counterfeit money. He poured out a lot from his
saddlepockets and the judge asked him, "Did you make it?' and he said,
"Yes, with my hands like any other honest man." "Go back and make more of
it," the judge said. The same thing happened at Lebanon. I have found the
money making type at my dad's. It had hinges. I have plowed up strips of
tin in dad's garden which dad said his uncle Sol used to make money. He
mixed it with old money. above from Isaac "Black Ike" Mullins.

Hope this gives you an idea of the tales of the counterfeiting.

Anita
