Your first step should probably be searching the records of the freedmen's bureau for SC. It's likely after freedom that he registered with them. One thing to keep in mind is that just because his owner's last name was Black does not mean you will find him under that name. If you can't find anything for Hezekiah Black, broaden your search for any Hezekiah. The Freedmen's Bureau is online, although not all records are, at http://www.freedmensbureau.com/ and there is a link on the front page to the different southern states including South Carolina. Some of the records online I would check through are the Transportation Requests and Transportation Orders and the Reports of Conditions in various locations. Just because he was freed in Charleston doesn't mean he stayed there unless you can find him in the 1870 census in Charleston.
On a side note, you might want to check out http://www.afrigeneas.com for information they have or to use their chat room and get live help. Also, I host a Southern US chat and soon an African American chat at http://www.genealogyforum.org and there is also an African American resource center (not a lot there yet) that you can check out. You might be able to find some help in the chats at both sites or using resources at both sites.
