Jeff,

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you with a few answers to your questions. First, the Thomas Black shown in the Black Cemetery, Clark County, Illinois was not born in 1762 but rather 1782 in Kentucky and died 24 December 1834 in Vigo County, Indiana. This Thomas Black was according to the records that I have seen the son of Josiah Black and Rebecca Oglethorpe and married Mary Ashmore. Obviously the gravestone was either misread or was incorrectly dated when made in 1834. Second, there certainly was a Josiah M. Black who was born 30 May 1820 and died 10 June 1862 that is buried in the Black Cemetery with Thomas Black. This Josiah M. Black married a Sarah J. (Unknown Maiden Name) who I have traced in the Census living in Vigo County, Indiana but did not appear to be married at the time of the Census to Sarah J. This is likely the Josiah M. Black connected to the Josiah Black/Rebecca Oglethorpe lineage. Third, I have also seen the first child of Josiah Black and!
Rebecca Oglethorpe as being either Thomas or James but I believe that Thomas was indeed the first male child of Josiah and Rebecca. As you stated in your original inquiry there are many common Black Family names in this region of the United States and it makes tracing them quite difficult and no doubt some of the data appearing in the web based records reflect errors as to who belong to which lineage. Hope this helps some and I will continue to look for additional clarification to this puzzle.

Arlin Benjamin
