Jon,

As I previously stated it depends on what you can believe that is contained in the LDS database. However, I did take the time to look for a Charles Albert Black or Charles A. Black and found your Charles (b. ~1845 in Nova Scotia) in the 1880 United States Census working as a boot and shoe maker in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois and living with his wife Sophia Voute (b. ~1851 in Pennsylvania) and Charles' father-in-law Edward Voute (b. ~1806 in Holland), and children Birdina (b. ~1874 in Pennsylvania), Kate (b. ~1876 in Canada), Dossie (b. ~1878 in Illinois), Clarence A. (b. ~1879 in Illinois). Charles A. Black states in the Census that he was born in Nova Scotia and his parents were born in Nova Scotia. Therefore, if you follow this trail through the LDS records you will find that Charles' parents were Ezra Black (b. ~1813 in Nova Scotia) and Mary Ann Carter (b. ~1816 in Amherst, Cumberland, Nova Scotia and married Ezra on 3 December 1840 in Amherst, Nova Scotia). Follow!
ing this same trail back in time you will find that this Black Family lineage goes from Ezra Black/Mary Ann Carter to William Black (b. ~1783 in Amherst, Nova Scotia and d. 1829 in Salem, Nova Scotia)/Mary Bent (b. ~1790 in Nova Scotia and d. 1844 in Nova Scotia) to Richard Black (b. 14 February 1762 or 1764 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England and d. 19 April 1843 in Amherst Point, Cumberland, Nova Scotia)/ Salley Chapman (married Richard in 1787 in Amherst Point, Nova Scotia)/Elizabeth Smith (married Richard 19 February 1821 in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia) to William Black (b. 1727 Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland and d. 1820 probably in Durchester, New Brunswick, Canada)/Elizabeth Stocks (married William about 1758 in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England)/Elizabeth Abber (married William in 1776 in Chignecto, Nova Scotia, Canada) and then to unknown Black Clan members residing in Renfrew, Scotland. As you can see the trail I provided previously corresponds to a large extent to the one !
provided in this message as they both come back to William Black and E
lizabeth Stocks from Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland and have a Yorkshire, England connection . I still believe that your Charles A. Black married Sophia Voute on 13 September 1870 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and that it is possible that the marriage license shows Charles as being Alfred Charles Black while his real name is likely Charles Alfred Black. I can not find any connection to Ireland unless Richard Black sailed to Nova Scotia from Ireland and there is a document stating that he migrated from Ireland or that he actually lived for a short time in Ireland before coming to Canada. I would focus your research on Amherst, Nova Scotia as this appears to be where this Black Family resided for several generations and there should be good documenation available which can help you determine whether Charles Freeze Black or Ezra Black was truly the father of your Charles. Hope this helps some and let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Arlin Benjamin
