Thank you for the information. I guess I am confused. I have my grandfather's birth certificate with the names as I stated them, which I understand could have been changed. I also had at one point naturalization papers for a Charles Black from 1890 in Chicago, stating place of origin as County Clare, Ireland. Is there some place I can look to find naturalization records from that time?
If you are correct, everything I was ever told about that line's origins was wrong.
