Arlin,
Undoubtably, Josiah M Black's son is not my Josiah O. However, I have several "coincidences" that lead my to believe my Josiah O. is the grandson of Josiah and Rebecca Black.
Josiah O. Black and Rachel Clements (or Clemons) were married in Clark Co., Illinois as far as I have seen.
In the 1820 Census, Washington Twshp, Clark Co, Illinois there is (listed in order):
Amos Ashmore
William Black
Thomas Black
Rebecca Black
William Black
Richard Armstrong?
John Black
Jacob Long
James Ashmore
Peter ?
Samuel Rory?
Jacob Groves
Samuel Ashmore
Seems likely these are the Black/Ashmore families you have researched. I could definitely be wrong, looks like you have been doing this longer than I have.
Thomas Black has a child in his household whose age corresponds to my Josiah's age.
Josiah Black (husband of Rebecca) named his first child Thomas. If that Thomas is related to me---he named his first male child Josiah, and he in turn named a male child Thomas. But, it may not have been his first male child...that may have been James (it all depends as I have seen James 1 yr older than Thomas or 1 yr younger). All conjecture really as it is based upon an assumption that Thomas's oldest son was indeed named Josiah.
There are certainly questions that need to be resolved before I can go back farther than Josiah O. b. abt 1806 I reckon.
One question I can think of right now...did Josiah M. ever reside in Clark Co, Illinois?
Any idea where the Thomas Black b.1762 and buried in the Black Cemetery in Clark Co, Illinois fits in to any Black family?
Thanks for the reply Arlin, look forward to hearing from you again.
Jeff
