I am once again jumping back into the fray. I am trying to connect my
husbands ggrandfather Alexander Black who evidently died as the master of a
shipwreck in about 1859 in or around New Orleans. I believe his father's
name was James. He named his first son James and a daughter Helen. So I
believe that Alexander's father and mother were James Black and Helen
_____. His son, George William Black says in two census reports that his
father was from Scotland. Alexander lived in or around Tampa Florida. The
only James that seems to fit with the time frame and the Scotland angle was
a James from Calhoun Co. FL 1840 census and a land grant in Gulf Co. FL
tract book of 1840. There is a FL census in Franklin Co FL with a James
Black. If he owned land as stated in the Land Grant it could easily have
been a place for a man who owned his own boat. Alexander reportedly did
own a boat. He was also thought to have New Orleans connections.
Enough for now. I am looking for help.
Thank you
