Karen,

The only record of a James L. Black that I have who was born in New Jersey comes from the 1880 Census. This James L. Black was born in 1875 and was the son of John Black and Mary C. Black. John Black (b. ~1827 in New Jersey) in 1880 was employed in a steel works and was living in Wayne, Passaic County, New Jersey with his wife Mary C. (b. ~1840 in New Jersey) and his children Sarah Black (b. ~1857), Alonzo M. Black (b. ~1865), Vinsetta Black (b. ~1870), and James L. Black (b. ~1875). I originally thought that maybe Mary C. Black was Mary Ann Clarke but I have not been able to connect her with a John Black who was born in about 1827. The Census states that both John's and Mary's parents were born in New Jersey. Not much but hope it helps a little.
