The l850 US Census Record for Ellen's family in Galveston City, County of Galveston, State of Texas is as follows:
224 235 Charles Black 37 M Carpenter 650 Geo
Mary Ann 32 F Geo
Caroline C. 4 F Texas
Family history has it that there was a son who was accidentally killed but no further information is known.
Also, Charles was known as a shipbuilder.

There are at least three versions as to the origins of Charles' father, William. Two have him born in Ireland another born in NC but all have him participating in the Revolutionary War. He married Catherine Taylor around l782 in VA and they had eight known children: Charles, John, Selah, Mary Lucy, Catherine, Margaret, William and Samuel Wesley b. 1807 in Upson Co. GA. One source has included a Rebecca (See Charles Prendergast's posting, BLACKS - NC - SC -KY - ARK: 1750-l850). I am a descendent of Margaret's.
Definitive information on this family remains elusive.
