In response to the article on 29 June regarding Lewis/Louis T. Black of Washington co., ILL. I, too, am researching that family.
On the 1880 Washington co., ILL census, Lively Grove twp, I believe the LOUIS BLACK is found living with his cousin. Census is such:
pg 535, dwelling 34, family 37
LOUIS BLACK W M 10 orphan servant IL AL IL
living with
Wm. T. Kennedy W M 30 farmer IL TN IL
MARGRETTE " W F 25 IL IL IL
Wm. J. " W M 1 IL IL IL
(my note: think the birth place of Margrette's mother should be AL, but this is the way it is on the census)

I believe this Margrette is the daughter of Margaret Black who married James Wilson. (our connection) Margaret Black who married James Wilson, was born in Oct 1826, Alabama; married 27 Nov 1845, Washington co., IL to James Wilson. I have not found her parents for sure, but do believe that her father was Lewis T. Black.
I think that Louis, age 10, was probably a son of Margaret Black Wilson's brother.
Also, there is a Lewis Black on the 1900 Kansas census, Cherokee co., Ross twp, ED34, D273, F274, which I think is the same Lewis Black that was 10 in 1880.
Census reads:

Lewis Black Nov 1868 31 mar 4 yr IL MO IN coal miner
Mary Nov 1868 21 mar 4 yr KS KY IL
mother of 2, 2 still living
Homer Nov 1896 3 KS IL KS
Annie Sep 1899 8/12 KS IL KS

I have some more information, if Ty Young would like to email me direct. Thank you
