Subject: [BLACK-L] Black Scotland to Ireland to Canada
Date: Fri, 2 Apr 2004 16:00:39 -0800 (PST)
I am searching for the family line of my great
grandfather.
Alexander Hillman Black, born 12 Aug 1851 in Ireland;
moved to Canada about 1870/1871. He was in Manitoba
by 1875, married to a Metis woman. He died 27 Apr
1929 in Vancouver, British Coulmbia, Canada.
He and his wife had 12 children, some of whom moved to
the States. Others stayed in Canada. One son,
Leslie, died in France during World War I.
His parents are recorded as being born in Scotland on
the various Censuses of Manitoba.
His father name was James Black and his mother was
Mary Hillman.
Reportedly, Alexander Black was a "remittance man",
paid an annual amount NOT to return home. Family
stories are that his father was some kind of Civil
Servant in Ireland, and that the family were members
of the Orange Order.
ANY information that might help trace this family
would be helpful.
Thanks,
=====
