James,
You are right about the Apple Valley Inn, that was in Apple Valley, being a
great place to eat. Also Apple Valley was the home of Roy Rogers and Dale
Evans, and the Roy Rogers Museum is just a short distance from Apple Valley.
Fifteen years ago one of my sons and his family lived in Phelan, 20 miles
from Apple Valley, and one of my grandsons was born in the Apple Valley
Hospital. Around 50 years ago, when I was a much young man, I used to
compete in the Annual Wild Burro Race that started in Apple Valley. It was a
hard 47 mile foot race, leading a wild burro up (and I mean UP) the back
road from Apple Valley to Big Bear. If I remember correctly, in the 47 miles
you go up around 5000 feet in elevation.
