Message Board Post:
I am looking for the family of John S. Black. My husband's aunt past away, and among her many family related documents, we found a small notebook. The inside cover reads "War activities of Mrs. J. S. Black, 5030 Cales (or maybe Cates) Ave., St. Louis, MO. Year of 1917-1918." The next page reads, "John S. Black's Jr. Social Security Card. date 3/10/37" Then the number is listed. I did a search of the SSDI for this number and got no results, which leads me to believe that this person may still be alive.
There are only 7 pages dedicated to "Work I did during the World Wide War Year of 1917-1918," then the rest is filled with names and addresses (including F. P. Black, 214 Nevin, Lancaster, PA), a recipe, and a diary of spending. Mrs. Black did Milling work in September 1923, and there are measurements listed for that.
Here is an excerpt from Sept 1933:
"Spent Xmas eve at Jerome's house, had a fine time. Dec 25, Xmas day had the family down at my house for dinner. Played Bunco Mrs. Smith. New Year's eve all the boys and Dolly went out to celebrate and Mrs. Smith and I played Bunco. I watched the old year play out, and the new one in 1934. Dolly and Jerome brought us a lunch down with eggnog and was it good. Had a lovely xmas and a fine new year. Tom had his car stolen but got it back in a few hours. Jan. 2nd I went down in the Grand Leader and got some shoes and a princess slip and a pair of gloves. First store I had been in in over three years. Certainly enjoyed it."
Would love to send this back to this family, and would like to find out what connection there might have been between the Black's of Missouri and the Cullinan's of Cleveland, Ohio.
