Dean - I agree with your conclusion that Eliza Black, daughter of Adam Black, was not the Eliza Black who married Martin Snodgrass Jr. I believe there were two Eliza Blacks based on the following:

I found Martin Snodgrass and his wife, Eliza, in 1850 and 1860 Boone Co. WV (VA), and in 1870 Roane Co, WV

I found Sylvester McCown (shown as Silvester McGowen) and wife, Eliza, in 1860 Lawrence Co. OH, Ironton Township:
Silvester McGowen 54 probate judge VA
Eliza 38 VA
Monroe 27 steam boat __? VA
Ann 25 servent VA
Oliver 13 VA
Albert 9 OH
Fanny 3 OH
(Monroe and Ann are children of Sylvester's first marriage to Harriet Summers - Fanny age 3 in 1860 was the 2nd wife of my g-grandfather, Constantine R. Summers)

......Sylvester McCown died in 1861 - here is his widow in the 1870 Ohio census:
1870 Lawrence Co. OH, Rome Twp, Dwelling #222:
Eliza McCowan 49 FW Keeping house
Oliver 24 MW Steamboat mate
Albert 19 MW Town cooper
Fanny 13 FW Attending school

I have a copy of Adam's Black's will showing in 1855 his daughter "Eliza Ann McCown" - tho I can't find the marriage of Sylvester & Eliza Black nor can I show proof Sylvester married the daughter of Adam Black.

Eliza McCown is a widow in the 1880 Lawrence Co. OH census. Martin Snodgrass and his wife, Eliza, live in 1880 Kanawha Co. WV.

Sylvester and Eliza McCown are buried in Miller Cemetery, Rome Township, Lawrence Co. OH.

Wish I could help with the Eliza Black who married Martin Snodgrass but I couldn't find anything about her...Lorna
